About Rolands Leather Works

Rolands Leather Works started for a simple reason: I couldn't find the backpack I wanted.

I was looking for something made from real, substantial leather — simple, functional, durable and built without unnecessary decoration. I couldn't find exactly what I had in mind, so I decided to make it myself.

That first project gradually turned into a process of refining patterns, construction methods, materials and small functional details. What began as making a backpack for myself eventually became Rolands Leather Works.

Built through use

I don't design backpacks only to look good in photographs. The designs are used in everyday life, travel and real-world conditions by me and people close to me. Their feedback helps reveal what works, what gets in the way and what can be improved.

Each new version is an opportunity to strengthen attachment points, improve pocket placement, refine proportions and simplify the things that don't need to be complicated.

Materials and philosophy

Every backpack is made by hand in Latvia using carefully selected leather and solid brass hardware. I choose materials for durability, character and the way they age over time. Natural marks, texture and colour variation are part of the material, meaning no two pieces are exactly alike.

I make each piece in limited quantities, allowing more time for careful construction and finishing.

The goal is simple: functional leather backpacks with character — built for decades, not seasons.
